What happens if mesothelioma is not treated?

Mesothelioma often begins in a thin lining, commonly around the lungs. As it grows, the lining can thicken and restrict how the lung expands. Fluid may collect in the chest; this is called Malignant Pleural Effusion and can worsen pressure, cough, and breathlessness.

The disease may extend into nearby tissues or other parts of the body. Symptoms vary with the site and extent of disease, so the course cannot be predicted from one symptom alone. A Persistent Cough or Shortness of Breath deserves medical assessment, especially when it is new, worsening, or accompanied by chest pain.

Ask for a prompt appointment with a respiratory, thoracic, or oncology team. Take imaging, biopsy information, medicine lists, and details about asbestos or other occupational exposure if relevant.

Treatment planning may include Chemotherapy or Immunotherapy, alongside procedures and symptom-focused care. Palliative Care can be introduced at any stage to help with breathlessness, pain, sleep, appetite, and emotional support; it does not mean that other treatment must stop.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or new confusion. Contact the clinical team promptly if cough, pain, fever, or reduced ability to walk or speak is getting worse.
