What Happens If Melanoma Is Not Treated?

Melanoma begins in pigment-producing cells and may appear as a new or changing mole or dark mark. As it grows, its depth and location help clinicians assess the next steps. Untreated disease may extend beyond the original skin site, involve nearby lymphatic tissue, or reach organs elsewhere in the body. Atypical-looking moles are not automatically melanoma, but a changing lesion cannot be safely classified from appearance alone.

Book a prompt dermatology appointment for a new, changing, bleeding, crusting, or persistently itchy mole. The clinician may examine it with magnification and recommend a biopsy or Surgical Excision. Confirmed disease may require Skin Cancer Surgery or Tumour Removal Surgery, with treatment selected according to the tumour and whether it has spread. Seek prompt advice for a rapidly changing dark lesion, spontaneous bleeding, an open sore that does not heal, a new firm lump near the lesion, or unexplained swelling in a nearby area.
