What happens if kidney stones is not treated?

A stone can move through the urinary tract and cause severe flank or abdominal pain as it travels. If it becomes lodged, urine can collect behind the blockage. This may cause difficulty passing urine, painful urination, nausea, or repeated urinary infections. A long-lasting blockage can reduce kidney function. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated and may worsen discomfort or encourage further stone formation.

The effect depends on the stone’s size, position, whether urine flow is blocked, and whether infection is present. Some small stones pass without a procedure, but symptoms alone cannot confirm that a stone has cleared.

Arrange a GP Consultation for assessment if you have suspected or known stones, especially when pain persists or urine symptoms continue. A clinician may examine you, review your medical history, and choose imaging such as an Abdominal Ultrasound to look for a stone or blockage. Follow the advised fluid and pain-relief plan; do not force large amounts of fluid if you cannot pass urine or have been told to restrict fluids.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening flank pain, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, repeated vomiting, blood in the urine, or inability to pass urine. A blocked urinary system with infection can deteriorate quickly and needs prompt treatment. Call emergency services for collapse, confusion, or breathing difficulty.

Ask where the stone is, whether urine flow is blocked, what symptoms should trigger urgent review, and how you will know the stone has passed. Also ask whether an Abdominal Ultrasound or another test is appropriate.
