What happens if Hodgkin lymphoma is not treated?

Hodgkin lymphoma can enlarge lymph nodes and involve areas in the chest, abdomen or pelvis. As it progresses, pressure on nearby structures may cause cough, discomfort or breathing changes. Whole-body effects can include fever, drenching night sweats, persistent itching, tiredness and reduced appetite. Night sweats or swollen lymph nodes do not by themselves establish the diagnosis; several non-cancer causes are possible.

The pace and pattern vary between people. A haematology team uses examination, blood tests and scans to understand the extent of disease and choose treatment. Delaying assessment can allow symptoms to become harder to manage and may reduce the available options for a simpler treatment plan.

Arrange an appointment with a haematologist or oncology team promptly if Hodgkin lymphoma has been diagnosed or is suspected. Bring scan reports, medicines and a record of fevers, sweats, itching, weight change and any swollen nodes. Treatment may involve chemotherapy, radiotherapy or another specialist approach. If treatment could affect future fertility, ask about fertility preservation before therapy starts. Some people with difficult-to-treat or returning disease may be assessed for autologous stem cell transplant.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pressure, confusion, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, or a high fever with marked weakness. Contact the treating team promptly for rapidly enlarging swelling, inability to drink, or new severe pain. These signs need assessment because lymphoma or an infection can affect breathing and circulation.
