How untreated gout can progress

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystals collecting in and around a joint. An attack may cause sudden severe pain, swelling, warmth, and redness, often in a toe or another joint. Symptoms can ease between attacks even though the underlying tendency remains.

Without a treatment plan, further attacks may become more disruptive and the joint may stay stiff or tender. Deposits called tophi can develop near joints, fingers, toes, or the ear; they may press on nearby tissues and affect movement. Yes. A quiet interval does not necessarily mean the crystal problem has gone. Ongoing urate deposits can continue to affect a joint without constant severe pain.
