What happens if food poisoning is not treated?

Food poisoning is an illness caused by contaminated food or drink. Fluid and salts are lost through repeated diarrhoea and vomiting, and fever can increase the strain on the body. A person may become tired, light-headed or unable to keep drinks down. The illness may settle on its own, but severe symptoms, vulnerable health or an infection needing specific treatment can change the level of risk. Traveller's Diarrhoea is one possible food- or water-related illness after travel.

Take frequent small sips of Oral Rehydration Therapy rather than relying only on plain water when fluid loss is substantial. Rest, eat light foods as tolerated and avoid preparing food for other people while you have active symptoms. A GP Consultation can assess hydration, medicines, recent travel and whether further tests or treatment are needed. IV Fluid Therapy may be considered when drinking is not enough or dehydration is significant.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, blood or black stool, severe Abdominal Pain, persistent vomiting, or a high or ongoing Fever. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with significant medical conditions should seek advice sooner because fluid loss may become serious more quickly.

Ask how much fluid to take, which medicines are suitable, whether you need testing, and what symptoms should prompt an emergency visit. Mention recent travel, shared meals and any blood in the stool.
