What happens if ectopic pregnancy is not treated?

An ectopic pregnancy implants outside the womb, most often in a fallopian tube. The pregnancy cannot develop normally there. As it grows, the tube may stretch and tear. Rupture can cause internal bleeding and sudden deterioration, even if earlier symptoms were mild.

Early signs can include one-sided pelvic pain, bleeding in early pregnancy or pain near the shoulder. Risk factors include previous Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or Blocked Fallopian Tubes, but an ectopic pregnancy can occur without known risk factors. A pregnancy test and Transvaginal Ultrasound help clinicians locate the pregnancy.

If pregnancy is possible and you have pain or bleeding, contact an urgent maternity or emergency service for advice today. Do not wait for a routine appointment. Assessment may include repeat pregnancy hormone tests and ultrasound because a very early pregnancy may not yet be visible.

Treatment depends on the pregnancy location, size, symptoms and test results. It may involve close monitoring in selected cases, medicine, or surgery such as Salpingectomy. Your clinician will explain what protects your immediate health and how follow-up checks work.

Call emergency services now for severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, marked weakness, dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, collapse, or heavy bleeding during early pregnancy. These can indicate internal bleeding. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unwell.
