What happens if dengue fever is not treated?

Dengue may begin with fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, or joint pain. A person can become more unwell around the time the fever settles, so feeling cooler does not always mean the danger has passed. Severe illness may cause fluid to leave the bloodstream, leading to low blood pressure and shock. Bleeding can show as easy bruising, bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting blood, or dark stools. Reduced urine, marked weakness, confusion, or breathing difficulty can signal serious illness.

Arrange a prompt GP Consultation for suspected dengue, especially after travel or mosquito exposure in an affected area. A clinician may use a Blood Test and repeated checks of hydration, blood pressure, and bleeding signs. Drink fluids as advised, rest, and do not take aspirin or ibuprofen unless a clinician says they are suitable, because they may increase bleeding risk. Keep a record of fever, fluid intake, urine, and new symptoms.

Seek emergency care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, cold or clammy skin, very little urine, or any significant bleeding. Go urgently if a child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a long-term illness is deteriorating. Do not wait for a fever to return before getting help.

Ask which symptoms require immediate return, how much fluid is appropriate, whether any regular medicines should be paused, and when follow-up blood checks are needed.
