What happens if Crohn's disease is not treated?

Crohn's disease can affect different parts of the digestive tract. Active inflammation may cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, blood in stool, tiredness, or unintentional weight loss. Over time, inflammation can scar the bowel and narrow its passage, making food and waste harder to move. It can also reduce appetite and nutrient absorption. The pattern varies, and symptoms may come and go, but improvement in discomfort does not prove that inflammation has stopped.

Arrange a GP Consultation for ongoing diarrhoea, abdominal pain, blood in stool, or unexplained weight loss. Assessment may include a physical examination, blood tests, stool tests, or other investigations. Keep a record of bowel changes, pain, food intake, and medicines. Take prescribed treatment as directed and avoid stopping it suddenly without advice, because inflammation can return even when symptoms are quieter.

Seek urgent care for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, heavy bleeding, fainting, or inability to pass stool or gas. Prompt assessment is also needed for dehydration, high fever, or marked weakness during a flare.

Ask how active the inflammation appears to be, which tests are needed, and what treatment aims to control it. Ask which symptoms should trigger urgent help and how nutrition should be supported.
