What happens if common cold is not treated?

A cold can cause an itchy throat, headache, hoarse voice, reduced smell, runny or blocked nose and cough. Symptoms may change as mucus and irritation move through the upper airways. Rest, fluids and simple comfort measures can help while the immune system clears the infection.

Occasionally, inflammation after a cold contributes to laryngitis, sinusitis or a middle ear infection. A lingering cough or loss of smell does not automatically mean one of these conditions is present; the pattern, severity and duration matter.

Rest when you need it, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and use warm drinks or gentle throat care for irritation. Saline nasal measures may ease congestion. Follow label directions for any over-the-counter medicine and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Reduce spread by washing hands, covering coughs and avoiding close contact while you feel unwell. Antibiotics do not treat the viruses that cause common colds, so they should only be used when a clinician identifies a bacterial reason.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue or grey lips, new confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms are worsening rather than easing, fever returns after improvement, ear pain becomes significant, or facial pain is severe.

A cough, hoarse voice or loss of smell that remains troublesome should also be discussed with a clinician, particularly when it affects eating, sleep or work.
