How an enlarged prostate can affect urination

As the prostate enlarges, it can narrow the tube that carries urine from the bladder. You may notice a weak stream, difficulty passing urine, stopping and starting, frequent urination, urgency or leakage. Holding urine in the bladder for longer can leave a feeling of incomplete emptying and disturb sleep. Persistent blockage can strain the bladder and may contribute to urinary infections or bladder stones. These symptoms can also have other causes, so blood in urine or a change in urinary function should not automatically be attributed to BPH.

Steps that can help

Book a GP Consultation to discuss the pattern, medicines, fluid habits and effect on sleep or daily life. Assessment may include an examination and a Urine Test to look for infection or blood. Depending on the findings, monitoring, lifestyle changes or medicines may be considered. Reduce evening drinks if night-time urination is troublesome, but do not restrict fluids enough to become dehydrated. Review medicines with a clinician rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, develop severe lower-abdominal pain, become confused or feel very unwell. Contact a clinician promptly for visible blood in urine, fever with urinary symptoms, new back or side pain, or rapidly worsening difficulty passing urine.
