What happens if asteatotic eczema is not treated?

Asteatotic eczema develops when the skin barrier loses too much water and oil, often producing fine cracks in a dry, polygonal pattern. Without care, Dry Skin can progress to deeper fissures that sting, bleed, or hurt when clothing rubs. Persistent Itchy Skin may lead to scratching, which adds inflammation and can thicken the surface. Cracks also provide an entry point for bacteria, so the area may become weepy, crusted, warmer, or more painful. Cold, dry air, hot showers, harsh cleansers, and frequent washing can keep the cycle active.

Use Emollient Therapy regularly, especially after bathing, and choose a gentle fragrance-free cleanser. Keep showers brief and comfortably warm rather than hot; pat the skin dry and apply a thick moisturising product while it is still slightly damp. A clinician may recommend Topical Corticosteroids for inflamed areas and explain where and how long to use them. Avoid scratching, rough exfoliation, and fragranced products until the skin settles. Continued or widespread symptoms deserve an examination because other eczema types and infections can look similar.

Arrange medical care for painful fissures, bleeding, spreading redness, marked warmth, pus, yellow crusts, fever, or a sudden deterioration. Seek prompt advice if moisturising does not control the itch or if sleep is repeatedly disturbed. Urgent assessment is needed for rapidly spreading redness with feeling unwell or severe pain out of proportion to the visible rash.
