What happens if acute bronchitis is not treated?

Acute bronchitis usually follows irritation or infection of the larger airways. Swelling and mucus can make coughing continue after the original trigger has eased. Coughing up phlegm, tiredness, chest soreness from coughing, and fever may occur. A common cold can precede bronchitis, but breathlessness, high fever, or a marked decline may point to pneumonia, asthma, or another diagnosis that needs examination.

Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoke, and use medicines only as directed.
