What happens before a sick leave certificate?

You may be asked when the problem began, how it affects movement, concentration, stamina or other work tasks, and whether treatment has helped. The clinician may examine you or review relevant records. They consider whether you need time away, temporary adjustments or a return with restrictions, according to your clinical situation and local documentation process.

A certificate describes the health-related work recommendation supported by the assessment. It does not replace treatment, and it may need review if your symptoms continue or your duties change.

Bring identification if the clinic requests it, your medicine list and any relevant reports. Note your job title, main duties, shift pattern and the tasks you cannot currently do safely. Be clear about the date symptoms started, changes since then and any workplace adjustments already tried.

Tell your employer or workplace contact that you are unwell according to their process, but share only the medical information you are comfortable disclosing. Follow the clinician's treatment and review advice while the certificate is being arranged.

Get urgent medical help for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, collapse, sudden weakness, severe confusion or a rapidly worsening condition. Do not wait for paperwork if you may be seriously ill. Contact the clinic if your symptoms prevent safe travel or if the requested document is time-sensitive.

Ask what work activities should be avoided, when your health should be reviewed, whether temporary adjustments are reasonable, and what to do if you remain unable to work.
