What a sick leave certificate is
A sick leave certificate records a clinician's assessment that illness may limit your ability to work.
It is not a substitute for medical care. The consultation focuses on your symptoms, how they affect your usual duties, and whether you need treatment, rest, workplace adjustments, or further assessment. The certificate may describe work incapacity without disclosing unnecessary personal clinical details.
How fast will I feel a difference?
The certificate itself does not make symptoms improve. It can support time away from duties while you recover or obtain treatment, but the pace of recovery depends on the underlying health issue. During the appointment, explain which tasks are difficult, such as concentrating, standing, driving, lifting, speaking with customers, or working night shifts.
What are the side effects?
A certificate has no physical side effects. Some people find it uncomfortable to discuss stress, mood, pain, or reduced function, especially when work is a source of pressure. Be candid about your symptoms and safety concerns so the clinician can assess your needs. The clinician may recommend care beyond time away from work if symptoms need active treatment.
How long will I be on it?
A certificate covers the period the clinician considers appropriate at that assessment. It is not an open-ended treatment plan. If you are still unable to return when it ends, or your job requirements change, arrange a review. A follow-up can consider recovery, ongoing symptoms, and whether phased duties or further care would be helpful.
Prepare for an accurate assessment
Bring identification if the clinic requests it, a list of medicines, and any relevant notes from another healthcare professional. Describe when the problem began, what makes it better or worse, and how it changes your ability to work safely. You do not need to diagnose yourself; concrete examples give the clinician a clearer picture than a job title alone.
Who may need one
You may seek an assessment when illness, injury, a mental health concern, treatment effects, or fatigue makes ordinary work difficult or unsafe. A certificate can also be relevant when an employer requires medical documentation. The decision follows an individual clinical assessment; it is not based only on the name of a condition or a request for a particular amount of leave.
What happens during the consultation
A clinician asks about your symptoms, medical history, medicines, and work duties. They may examine you or arrange tests when clinically needed. You can ask about confidentiality and what information will appear on the document. If the clinician considers leave medically appropriate, they issue documentation and explain follow-up, treatment, and signs that need earlier review.
While you are away from work
Use the period away to follow the care plan, attend arranged appointments, and create a routine that supports sleep, meals, movement within your limits, and contact with supportive people. Return sooner for new or worsening symptoms. Before resuming duties, consider whether your role includes safety-sensitive work and whether you still have symptoms that could affect it.
When to seek more urgent help
Do not rely on paperwork when symptoms need prompt care. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness, confusion, thoughts of harming yourself, or feeling unable to stay safe. For less urgent but persistent symptoms, book a review rather than repeatedly extending leave without reassessment.
Other support that may help
Depending on the problem, alternatives or additions may include a treatment plan, counselling, specialist referral, workplace adjustments, or a conversation about modified duties. A GP consultation can help clarify symptoms even when a certificate is not needed. If work-related exhaustion is part of the picture, support should address both health needs and the practical demands contributing to it.
Where to arrange an assessment
Choose a licensed healthcare provider who can assess the illness and explain the document they can issue. Tell the clinic at booking that you need an assessment related to work absence, but do not delay urgent care while waiting for an appointment. Bring any employer form only if you have one; the clinician still needs to make their own assessment.
Questions people ask
Can I get a certificate without discussing my symptoms?
A clinician needs enough information to assess your health and how it affects your work.
Will a certificate include my full diagnosis?
Ask the clinician what information is necessary for the document and how your privacy will be handled.
What if I am not ready to return when it ends?
Arrange a review so your symptoms, treatment, and work demands can be reassessed.
