What happens after patch testing?

Patch reactions may become clearer after the patches are removed because contact allergy can be delayed. The clinician compares each marked test area with the substances applied and considers whether the reaction fits your skin problem and exposure history. A negative result does not explain every type of rash, and an irritant reaction is different from an allergy.

Keep the test areas protected and follow the clinic's instructions about washing, scratching and applying products. Write down products, cosmetics, medicines or workplace materials you use so the result can be matched to real exposures. If an allergen is identified, request its name in writing and check ingredient labels carefully. Your clinician may suggest a treatment plan, including a short course of a topical medicine when appropriate.

Contact the testing clinic if a reaction becomes very painful, spreads beyond the test sites, blisters extensively or interferes with sleep. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, throat tightness, wheezing, faintness or trouble breathing.

Ask which substances were positive, where they may be found, how to avoid hidden exposures, whether a reaction was allergic or irritant, and what to use if the rash returns.
