What happens after nuchal translucency scan?

The scan measures a fluid-filled space at the back of the baby’s neck during early pregnancy and also checks aspects of development and dating. The measurement is interpreted alongside pregnancy history, blood screening and the baby’s appearance on ultrasound. It is a screening assessment, so a finding outside the expected range does not confirm a chromosomal or structural condition, and a reassuring measurement cannot exclude every concern.

Your provider may explain the combined screening result during the appointment or arrange a separate discussion. Depending on the full result, options can include routine antenatal care, non-invasive prenatal testing, genetic counselling, an earlier review or a later detailed scan. The scan itself does not usually cause symptoms. Contact your maternity team if you have bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fever or fluid leakage after the appointment, or if you need help understanding an unexpected result. Seek urgent care for severe pain, fainting or heavy bleeding.
