What happens after chemotherapy before surgery?

Chemotherapy given before an operation is followed by a review of how you are feeling, blood tests, and sometimes imaging or an examination of the treated area. These checks help the team judge whether your body has recovered enough for surgery and whether the planned operation remains appropriate.

The operation may be scheduled after the treatment interval advised by your oncology and surgical teams. The final pathology from surgery can provide additional information about what remains in the removed tissue. It may affect later treatment discussions, but it does not replace the surgical consultation before the operation.

Report fever, new infection symptoms, unusual bruising, breathlessness, or ongoing vomiting before surgery. Take medicines exactly as directed and ask which ones to pause. Keep your blood-test and surgical appointments, arrange transport if needed, and discuss eating, drinking, activity, and care of any treatment port with your team. Bring questions about the planned procedure, recovery, and pathology.

During the period after chemotherapy, contact your oncology team urgently for a fever or chills, because infection can become serious when blood counts are low. Seek immediate help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, collapse, uncontrolled vomiting, or bleeding that does not stop.

Ask how your blood results affect timing, what the scans or examination show, whether the operation plan has changed, which medicines require adjustment, and when the surgical pathology will guide further care.
