What happens after MRI scan?

The scan images are checked by a radiologist, who prepares a report for the clinician who requested the examination. The report may describe an area that looks normal, a finding that needs monitoring, or a finding that needs a closer look. An MRI can show detailed structure, but it does not by itself provide a tissue diagnosis.

If an area needs confirmation, your clinician may discuss a biopsy or another scan. The next step also depends on why the MRI was requested, previous results, and your symptoms. A recommendation for more testing does not by itself mean that cancer is present.

Unless your team gives different instructions, you can usually return to normal activities after the scan. If contrast medicine was used, follow the department's advice and mention any new rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty. Keep the appointment where the report will be discussed, and bring details of implants, medicines, allergies, and earlier imaging if they have not already been recorded.

Contact the imaging department or your clinician if you develop a new rash, facial swelling, wheezing, or trouble breathing after contrast. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. For questions about the scan report, use the clinician who requested the MRI because they can interpret it alongside your clinical history.

Ask when the report is expected, what the main finding means, whether comparison with earlier images is available, whether a biopsy is recommended, and what symptoms should prompt earlier contact.
