What happens after a mammogram?

A request for more images does not by itself mean cancer. Dense breast tissue, an unclear area, a cyst, or a technical issue can make further assessment useful. The report may compare the images with earlier mammograms and may suggest a breast ultrasound, clinical examination, or biopsy. Your clinician explains what the finding means in the context of your symptoms and history.

Watch for the result through the route your screening service described and attend any recommended follow-up. Tell the clinician about a new lump, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, a change in breast shape, or persistent focal pain, even if your mammogram was reassuring. Bring previous reports if you have them, and ask when you should return for routine screening.

Arrange a clinical review promptly for a new or growing breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, nipple inversion that is new, skin puckering, redness with swelling, or a persistent one-sided change. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, fever, or feeling very unwell. A mammogram is one part of assessment and does not replace review of a new symptom.

Ask whether the images were compared with earlier studies, whether the result needs extra views or an ultrasound, and when the written report will arrive. If a biopsy is suggested, ask what area will be sampled, how results are given, and what to do while waiting.
