What happens after a tubal dye test?

The images may show the shape of the uterine cavity and whether dye passes through each tube. Open tubes do not guarantee pregnancy, and a finding of blockage does not explain every fertility difficulty. Your fertility team combines the result with your menstrual history, ovulation assessment, semen testing, and any previous treatment.

Use a pad if you have light spotting and follow the clinic's advice about bathing, sex, and exercise. Rest if you feel crampy, drink fluids, and use only pain relief that your clinician has said is suitable for you. Ask when the report will be ready and whether the result changes the timing of trying to conceive or a treatment such as IUI.

Call the clinic if pain is worsening, bleeding becomes heavy, or you develop fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, vomiting, or dizziness. These can signal infection or another complication and should be assessed. Seek urgent care for severe pain, collapse, or difficulty breathing, particularly if you may be pregnant.

Ask whether both tubes were seen clearly, whether the uterine cavity looked typical, and what the findings mean for your fertility plan. Clarify which symptoms are expected, how long spotting may last, and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
