What happens after dating scan?

An early scan may check where the pregnancy is located, whether cardiac activity is seen, the number of pregnancies, and measurements used to estimate gestational age. Dates can change when the measurement differs from the last menstrual period estimate. Sometimes the view is limited because the pregnancy is very early or the dates are uncertain, so a repeat scan and blood tests may be suggested.

Ask when the written report will be available and which date your maternity team will use for appointments. Continue prescribed medicines and pregnancy supplements unless your clinician advises otherwise. Your team may discuss routine antenatal care and later screening, including a nuchal translucency scan when appropriate for your pregnancy and local care pathway.

Seek urgent medical advice for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, or marked dizziness. Contact your maternity team promptly for bleeding, fluid loss, fever, or pain even if the scan was reassuring.

Ask: What gestational age and due date were estimated? Was the pregnancy seen in the uterus? Was cardiac activity seen? Do I need a repeat scan, blood tests, or the next screening appointment?
