Screening looks for high-risk human papillomavirus and, when needed, cell changes on the cervix. A result showing HPV does not confirm cancer; it indicates that follow-up may be needed. Some samples are inadequate and need repeating because there was not enough material to interpret. The result letter or portal message should explain the recommended timing and whether you need a closer examination called colposcopy.
