What happens after breast ultrasound?

Ultrasound can show whether an area looks fluid-filled, solid, or otherwise different from nearby tissue. The scan itself does not always provide a final diagnosis. Your report may describe a reassuring finding, an area that needs monitoring, or a finding that should be assessed with a tissue sample. A recommendation for more testing does not by itself mean cancer.

Ask when and how you will receive the report, and arrange the recommended follow-up before leaving the appointment if possible. Take the report to the clinician who requested the scan, especially if you have earlier mammograms or ultrasound images for comparison. If a biopsy is advised, ask what type is planned, how the area will be located, and how results will be shared.

Contact your healthcare team promptly if a breast lump changes quickly, the skin becomes markedly red or swollen, the nipple turns inward unexpectedly, or there is bloody nipple discharge. Seek urgent help for severe pain with fever, rapidly increasing swelling, or feeling seriously unwell.

Ask: What did the ultrasound show? Is comparison with earlier imaging needed? When should I expect the report? Do I need monitoring or a biopsy, and what symptoms should prompt an earlier review?
