What Happens After Breast Biopsy?

After a breast biopsy, the sample is examined, the site heals, and your clinician explains the result and next steps. You can usually go home after the procedure. Mild tenderness, bruising, swelling, or a small amount of bleeding can occur around the biopsy site.

A pathologist examines the tissue or cells and sends a report to the clinician who arranged the biopsy. The report may describe benign changes, a condition that needs monitoring, or cancerous cells. Some reports need additional review or special testing before the result is fully explained, so a delay does not by itself indicate a serious diagnosis. Your clinician will match the report with your examination and imaging findings.

If the result is benign, you may need routine breast care or follow-up imaging. If the sample does not explain the area seen on imaging, another biopsy or a surgical procedure may be discussed. If abnormal or cancerous cells are found, your care team will explain the diagnosis and treatment choices.

Follow the dressing, bathing, activity, and pain-relief instructions from your biopsy team. Keep the area clean and dry as directed, and avoid rubbing or pressing on it. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may ease swelling if your clinician says it is suitable. Wear a supportive bra if that feels more comfortable. Do not remove a dressing or restart medicines that affect bleeding without checking the instructions you were given. Arrange the result appointment or contact the clinic if you do not know how results will be shared.

Contact your biopsy clinic promptly if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, the swelling is rapidly increasing, or pain is becoming stronger rather than settling. Seek medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, pus-like drainage, fever, or feeling increasingly unwell, as these can signal infection. Emergency help is appropriate for trouble breathing, fainting, or heavy bleeding that does not stop with pressure.

Ask when and how you will receive the pathology result, whether the result matches the imaging findings, and what follow-up is recommended. You can also ask which symptoms should prompt a call, when to return to exercise, and whether a breast specialist or surgeon should review the findings. Bring a list of medicines and any questions about the wording of the report.
