What does wheezing feel like with bronchiolitis?

Wheezing is a very common presentation of Bronchiolitis and may sound like a fine whistle with fast, effortful breathing. A baby or young child may also have a rattly cough, blocked nose, poor feeding, or visible movement of the skin between the ribs while breathing.

Bronchiolitis inflames the small airways, usually during a viral illness. The child may breathe more quickly and find feeding tiring because sucking, swallowing, and breathing compete for the same effort. Wheezing can be more noticeable after a cough or when the child is upset, but the work of breathing matters more than the sound alone.

Keep the child upright while awake and offer small, frequent feeds if they can manage them. Clear nasal mucus gently before feeds when needed, and keep the environment free from smoke. Watch breathing, alertness, wet nappies, and feeding rather than relying only on the wheeze. Do not give cough medicines unless a clinician specifically advises them.

Seek emergency care if the child has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest indrawing, grunting, marked sleepiness, limpness, or cannot feed because of breathlessness. Same-day medical advice is needed when feeds are clearly reduced, wet nappies become less frequent, or breathing is getting faster or harder.

Ask how to count breathing, which signs mean the child should return, and how to support fluids. Mention age, feeding changes, wet nappies, fever, prematurity, and any heart or lung condition because these details affect monitoring.
