What does wheezing feel like with anaphylaxis?

Wheezing is a common presentation of Anaphylaxis and can feel like a sudden whistle, tight chest, or struggle to draw breath. Breathing may become noisy quickly, sometimes with throat tightness, hoarseness, cough, or a feeling that air is not moving normally.

Anaphylaxis is a rapid, serious allergic reaction that can affect the airways and circulation. Wheezing may appear with hives, facial or tongue swelling, stomach symptoms, dizziness, or collapse, but not every sign has to be present. A new breathing change after an allergen exposure must be treated as an emergency possibility.

Use an adrenaline auto-injector immediately if one has been prescribed and anaphylaxis is suspected, following its instructions. Call emergency services, state that anaphylaxis is suspected, and do not leave the person alone. Keep them lying down with legs raised if comfortable; allow someone who is struggling to breathe to sit with their legs extended. Do not give food or drink.

Any sudden wheeze with breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives, or vomiting after a possible allergen needs emergency help now. Symptoms can worsen even if they briefly improve, so medical observation is needed after initial treatment.
