What does wheezing feel like with allergic rhinitis?

Wheezing is a common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis and may feel like a high-pitched whistle when you breathe out. You may notice chest tightness, a need to work harder to breathe, or noisy breathing after exposure to dust, pollen, mould, or animal dander.

Allergic rhinitis mainly affects the nose, causing congestion, sneezing, and an itchy or runny nose. Wheezing suggests that air is moving through narrowed lower airways, so it should not automatically be attributed to nasal allergies. Symptoms can vary with exposure and may occur with cough or shortness of breath.

Move away from the suspected trigger and sit upright. Follow any personalised inhaler or allergy plan you already have. Avoid smoke and strenuous activity while breathing is noisy. Arrange a clinical review if wheezing is new, keeps returning, or occurs with nighttime symptoms, exercise, or reduced activity; an examination can separate nasal allergy symptoms from asthma or another airway problem.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to speak comfortably, or rapidly worsening breathing. Prompt assessment is also needed if wheezing starts suddenly after a food, medicine, or sting, especially with swelling of the lips or tongue, hives, vomiting, or dizziness.

Ask whether the wheeze is coming from the chest or upper airway, whether testing for asthma is appropriate, and which allergy treatments fit your symptoms. Mention triggers, timing, cough, breathlessness, and any medicines you have tried.
