What does vomiting feel like with meningitis?

Vomiting is a common presentation of Meningitis and may occur with a severe headache, fever, stiff neck, light sensitivity, or confusion. Nausea may be intense, and vomiting can happen suddenly. The person may look very unwell, become unusually sleepy, or find it difficult to tolerate bright light or movement.

Meningitis is inflammation around the brain and spinal cord. Vomiting becomes especially concerning when it appears with a new severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, rash, altered alertness, or seizures. Symptoms can develop in different orders, and a rash or every listed feature may not be present. Vomiting on its own has many possible explanations.

If meningitis is a possibility, seek emergency medical help immediately rather than waiting for the symptoms to settle. Keep the person supervised in a quiet position and take note of when the symptoms began. Do not delay care to give food or drink, especially if the person is drowsy, confused, or having trouble swallowing. Avoid close contact with vomit and wash hands afterward.

Call emergency services for vomiting with a severe or rapidly worsening headache, fever and stiff neck, confusion, difficulty waking, seizure, breathing difficulty, or a purple or rapidly spreading rash. An infant may instead be irritable, feed poorly, have a bulging soft spot, or be unusually sleepy. Rapid assessment matters even if symptoms seem to improve temporarily.

Ask what tests or treatment are needed, what symptoms should trigger another emergency call, and whether close contacts need specific advice. Report fever readings, headache onset, changes in alertness, rash, recent illness, and any medicines already taken.
