What does vaginal itching feel like with bacterial vaginosis?

Vaginal Itching is a common presentation of Bacterial Vaginosis and may feel like irritation around the vaginal opening. The sensation can be mild or persistent, with soreness or a raw feeling after rubbing. Bacterial vaginosis can also change discharge, often making it thinner and giving it a noticeable fish-like odour. Itching alone cannot identify the cause.

Bacterial vaginosis involves a shift in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria. The altered environment may irritate the vulva and vaginal entrance, so discomfort can be felt on the external skin as well as just inside the vagina. Burning during urination may occur when irritated skin is exposed to urine, but this symptom can also have other causes. Thrush, an STI, contact irritation from fragranced products, and skin conditions can feel similar.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the itching is new, continues, or comes with unusual discharge or odour. A clinician may examine the area and test a sample to distinguish bacterial vaginosis from thrush or an STI. Until then, wash gently with water or an unperfumed cleanser, keep the area dry, and choose breathable underwear. Avoid douching, scented washes, deodorants, and scratching. Do not use leftover treatment because the wrong medicine may delay the right diagnosis.

Seek prompt medical care for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, sores, blisters, unexpected bleeding, or pain during sex. Arrange testing soon if you are pregnant, have a new sexual partner, or think you may have been exposed to an STI. Urgent assessment is appropriate if pain is severe, you feel faint, or symptoms worsen quickly.
