What does unexplained weight loss feel like with cancer of unknown primary?

There is no single feeling that identifies cancer of unknown primary. Weight can decrease without trying, while appetite may fade, meals may become less enjoyable, or fullness may arrive sooner than expected. You might notice looser clothes, less stamina, weakness when climbing stairs, or loss of muscle. Nausea, pain, altered taste, swallowing difficulty or bowel changes may make eating harder, but some people have few symptoms besides the weight change.

Cancer of unknown primary means cancer has been found, but tests have not yet shown where it began. Unexplained weight loss cannot show the starting site. The clinical team considers your symptoms, examination and test results together while investigating.

Write down when the change began, how appetite and energy vary, and any pain, nausea, bowel or swallowing symptoms. Bring a medicine and supplement list to appointments. Tell the team if food feels difficult, because treating nausea, constipation, pain or mouth problems may make eating easier. Ask whether a dietitian or other supportive-care professional can help you maintain nourishment and strength during assessment.

Contact your care team promptly for continued unplanned weight loss, worsening weakness, persistent vomiting, new swallowing trouble, ongoing diarrhoea or inability to eat and drink. Seek urgent care for fainting, severe pain, chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion or inability to keep fluids down.
