What does thyroid removal surgery treat?

A surgeon may remove one thyroid lobe or the whole thyroid. The choice depends on the nodule or cancer, its size and position, examination findings, and whether nearby lymph nodes need assessment. Surgery can remove known thyroid cancer, provide tissue for a definitive diagnosis, or relieve pressure from a large thyroid nodule or enlarged gland.

Removing the thyroid does not automatically mean that additional treatment is needed. Some people are offered radioactive iodine therapy after surgery, while others need observation and regular blood tests or scans. The plan depends on the final pathology and the person's individual risks.

Before surgery, discuss the planned extent of removal, medicines that affect bleeding, and whether lymph-node surgery is expected. Afterward, follow wound-care and voice-care instructions. If the whole gland is removed, thyroid hormone replacement is usually needed and the dose is adjusted with blood tests.

Report tingling around the mouth or fingers, muscle cramps, increasing neck swelling, trouble swallowing, or a sudden voice change. These symptoms can need timely review because the operation is close to the voice nerves and the glands that regulate calcium.

Seek emergency help for rapidly increasing neck swelling, difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, or severe weakness with spasms. Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, spreading redness, wound drainage, persistent vomiting, or a voice change that is worsening rather than improving.
