What do swollen glands feel like with a common cold?

Lymph nodes filter fluid and respond when nearby tissues are dealing with infection. With a cold, nodes in the neck may become easier to feel for a while. They can be soft or slightly firm and may hurt when touched. A runny or blocked nose, sore throat, cough or feeling tired can occur at the same time. Swollen glands can have many causes, so their presence does not identify a particular infection on its own.

Rest, drink enough fluid to keep your urine pale, and use warm drinks or a warm compress for neck discomfort. Follow the label for any pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition. Avoid squeezing the glands. Arrange a review if they continue enlarging, remain present after the cold has settled, or make eating and drinking difficult.

Seek urgent help if you have trouble breathing, cannot swallow saliva, develop severe neck swelling, become confused, or feel seriously unwell. Contact a clinician promptly for a hard or fixed lump, repeated night sweating, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, or swelling above the collarbone. These features need assessment rather than home observation.

Ask which neck areas are enlarged, whether the nodes feel consistent with a recent cold, and how long to watch them. Ask whether your throat, ears or teeth need checking and which changes should bring you back sooner.
