Photodermatitis is an inflammatory reaction in skin affected by light. It can produce red or darker patches, swelling, tiny bumps, blisters, scaling, or a sunburn-like feeling. The change usually follows the outline of exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck, forearms, or backs of the hands, while covered skin may be less affected. Some people notice symptoms during exposure; others notice them later the same day or after the skin has cooled. A clinician can distinguish photodermatitis from ordinary sunburn, contact irritation, infection, or another light-related condition.

Move out of direct light when symptoms start and cover the affected skin with clothing or shade. Avoid applying new fragranced products or home remedies over irritated areas.
