What does strength training rehabilitation treat?

Short answer
Strength training rehabilitation treats weakness and reduced physical capacity linked with tendon, muscle, bone, or joint problems through graded resistance exercise.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Training target
- Strength, control, and tolerance for useful activity
- Progression
- Load changes according to response and function
What this approach can support
A programme may be used for Achilles tendinitis, patellar tendinitis, gluteal tendinopathy, or broader tendinopathy. It can also help people with muscle weakness, sarcopenia, osteopenia, or hypermobility syndrome build useful capacity and control. Exercises may include slow lifts, isometric holds, balance tasks, and functional movements.
Loading is adjusted to symptoms, technique, recovery, and the task you want to regain. The therapist may increase resistance, range, speed, or repetitions gradually; a flare does not automatically mean damage, but it can signal that the dose needs changing.
Starting and progressing
Begin with an assessment of strength, movement, pain behaviour, medical history, and goals. Learn the technique before adding load, warm up as advised, and keep a record of how the body responds afterward. Tell your clinician about persistent swelling, marked fatigue, or pain that changes your walking or daily tasks so the plan can be adjusted.
When to seek care
Stop and seek prompt assessment for a sudden pop with loss of function, a new deformity, rapidly increasing swelling, severe unexplained pain, chest symptoms, or faintness during exercise. New weakness that progresses or affects both sides also deserves medical review.
Questions to discuss
Which tissue or function should we target first? What level of discomfort is acceptable? How will we progress the load, and which activities should wait while capacity improves?

Questions people ask
Is strength training only for athletes?
No. The exercises can be adapted for daily tasks, work, balance, bone health, or returning to sport.
Can I train with tendon pain?
Often a carefully dosed programme is used, but the starting load and acceptable symptoms should be set after assessment.
