What does skin swelling feel like with cellulitis?

Cellulitis affects deeper skin and soft tissue, commonly after a break such as a cut, bite, crack, or wound. The involved area may feel warmer than nearby skin, look red or darker than usual, and become increasingly sore when touched or moved. The edges can be less sharply defined than a surface irritation. Swelling may occur on an arm, leg, face, or another area, and fever or feeling unwell can accompany it.

Arrange medical assessment promptly because cellulitis can need prescription treatment. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing it, and remove tight jewellery or clothing if swelling is increasing. Resting and raising an affected limb may reduce pressure while you arrange care. Marking the edge of redness with a pen and recording the time can help show whether it is spreading.

Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness or swelling, severe pain, fever, chills, confusion, marked weakness, blisters, skin turning dusky, or swelling near the eye. Emergency assessment is also needed if breathing or swallowing becomes difficult. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system should seek advice early when a wound becomes red, hot, or swollen.
