What Does Cracked Skin Feel Like With Psoriasis?

Psoriasis can make skin thick, dry, and inflamed. As a plaque loses moisture, its surface may form a fissure, especially over knuckles, fingertips, heels, or other areas that bend and stretch. A crack can sting when water, soap, sweat, or fabric touches it. Bleeding may occur if the split reaches deeper layers. The surrounding plaque may remain itchy and scaly even when the main sensation is tenderness.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water and pat dry rather than rubbing. Apply a fragrance-free, thick moisturiser soon after washing, including over the surrounding plaque. Keep nails short, protect hands during wet or dusty tasks, and cover an open fissure with a clean dressing if friction makes it worse. A clinician can recommend psoriasis treatment and a suitable dressing when moisturiser alone is not enough.

Seek prompt medical advice if the crack is increasingly red, warm, swollen, draining, or painful, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Arrange a review when fissures keep reopening, interfere with walking or hand use, or do not improve with gentle care.
