What does cracked skin feel like with hand eczema?

Fissures can form across the knuckles, fingertips, palms, or between the fingers. They may sting when you wash your hands, grip an object, type, or stretch the skin. Roughness, scaling, redness, and tiny fluid-filled blisters may occur during some flares, while other episodes mainly cause dryness and splits.

Frequent water exposure, detergents, solvents, gloves, and friction can aggravate hand eczema. Cracked hands can have other causes too, so a clinician may need to examine the pattern and ask about work, hobbies, and products.

Use a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and a thick fragrance-free moisturiser after washing. Reapply before bed and cover painful fissures with clean dressings when appropriate. For wet or chemical tasks, use suitable protective gloves and replace damp gloves promptly.

Avoid fragranced products and harsh scrubbing. If a prescribed cream is part of your plan, use it exactly as directed and ask how it should be applied around open cracks. Recording exposures can help identify patterns that are easy to miss.

Book an assessment when cracking affects work, sleep, grip, or keeps returning despite protection. Get prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening pain, as broken skin can become infected.

Ask whether your hand pattern fits eczema, contact allergy, or another condition, and whether patch testing could help identify an exposure. Discuss moisturiser choices, glove materials, treatment of fissures, and when to return if the flare worsens.
