What does shortness of breath feel like with asthma?

Asthma can make breathing feel restricted, particularly when breathing out. You might notice wheezing, coughing, a tight chest, or rapid breathing. Symptoms may appear after exercise, exposure to dust, smoke, pollen, cold air, or an infection, and can be worse at night. Some episodes build gradually, while others become intense quickly. These sensations can also happen with other breathing problems, so a clinician uses your history and examination to work out the cause.

Stop and sit upright, keep your shoulders relaxed, and use your reliever inhaler exactly as prescribed in your asthma plan. Avoid smoke and move away from a known trigger if you can do so safely. Keep track of how often symptoms occur, your possible triggers, and how well your inhaler works. Arrange a review if symptoms disturb sleep, limit normal activity, or need the reliever more often than your plan allows.

Get emergency help if breathing is rapidly worsening, you cannot speak comfortably, your lips look blue or grey, you feel confused or faint, or your prescribed reliever is not helping as expected. Follow your written asthma action plan during an attack. Do not wait for symptoms to become unbearable before seeking help.
