What does scoliosis bracing treat?

Scoliosis bracing treats a growing spine with a curvature that needs support to reduce the risk of further progression. It is prescribed after assessment of the curve, skeletal maturity, growth remaining, and overall health. A brace supports alignment while it is worn; it does not instantly straighten the spine or replace follow-up care.

A custom-fitted brace applies carefully planned contact around the trunk to guide the spine during growth. Scoliosis is the main condition considered for this approach. Kyphosis is a different spinal curve and needs its own assessment, even when a brace is discussed. The design may use thermoplastic splint material shaped to the person's body.

Wear the brace for the schedule prescribed by the spine team and attend fitting or adjustment visits. Check the skin for persistent rubbing, pressure marks, or a sore area, and keep the brace clean as instructed. Comfortable clothing, careful positioning, and prescribed exercises can make daily use easier. Do not alter the brace at home.

Contact the brace team if pain, skin damage, breathing discomfort, rapid growth, or a loose or tight fit interferes with wear. Seek urgent help for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain after injury, or numbness that is spreading. Keep scheduled imaging and clinical reviews so the plan can be updated.
