What does proton therapy treat?

This treatment directs high-energy protons towards a tumour. The beam can be planned to release much of its radiation within the target and reduce dose beyond it. That feature can matter when a tumour lies close to the brain, spinal cord, eyes, heart, or other sensitive structures. It does not make every tumour suitable, and it is still a form of radiotherapy.

Doctors may consider it for cancers in children, whose developing tissues can be especially important to protect, and for tumours such as chondrosarcoma in complex locations. The decision depends on the tumour's position, size, spread, previous treatment, and the dose pattern achievable with other options.

Ask the radiation oncology team to compare a proton plan with a photon-based plan, including which organs would receive radiation and how treatment would be delivered. Bring details of previous surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. A planning scan is used to map the tumour and nearby organs before a final recommendation is made.

Contact your treatment team promptly for new severe pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, a new seizure, breathing difficulty, or a fever during cancer treatment. These symptoms need clinical assessment and are not a way to judge whether proton therapy is appropriate.
