What does bleeding after menopause feel like with endometrial polyps?

An endometrial polyp is a growth from the lining of the womb. It may cause spotting, pink or brown discharge, or bleeding that is similar to a period. Bleeding can occur after sex or at an unpredictable time. Many people have no pain, although mild cramping or pelvic discomfort can happen.

Bleeding alone cannot establish that a polyp is responsible. Vaginal dryness, hormone changes, medicines, womb-lining conditions, and cancer can cause similar symptoms. A clinician may need to look inside the womb or examine tissue to identify the cause.

Contact a doctor or gynaecology service for assessment, even when the episode is brief. Record the colour, amount, duration, and any trigger. Tell the clinician about hormone medicines, tamoxifen, or blood-thinning medicines if applicable. An ultrasound may be used, followed by a hysteroscopy or tissue sampling when needed.

Seek urgent medical care if bleeding is heavy, you feel dizzy or faint, or you have severe pelvic pain, fever, or unusual weakness. For light spotting without these warning signs, arrange a prompt appointment. Do not rely on a symptom settling as proof that no further review is needed.

Ask whether imaging can locate a polyp, whether it should be removed or sampled, and when results will be discussed. Ask which symptoms after the appointment should lead to urgent care.
