What does persistent cough feel like with lung cancer?

A cough connected with a lung problem may be tickling, harsh, barking, or deep in the chest. It can be worse with talking, activity, or lying down. Some people also notice hoarseness, chest pain when breathing or coughing, wheezing, tiredness, or repeated chest infections.

Cough is common and has many possible causes, including viral illness, asthma, reflux, allergies, smoking, and some medicines. The quality of a cough cannot diagnose cancer. A clinician may listen to your chest and consider imaging or other tests based on your symptoms and history.

Book a medical review when a cough persists, returns, becomes different, or is accompanied by breathlessness, chest discomfort, hoarseness, unexplained weight change, or repeated infections. Note when it began, what triggers it, whether mucus is present, and its colour. Mention smoking or workplace exposures and bring your medicine list.

Drink fluids if suitable for you and avoid smoke or other airway irritants. Use cough medicines only as directed, particularly if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Get urgent help if you cough up blood, struggle to breathe, develop sudden chest pain, become confused, faint, or have blue or grey lips. Severe breathlessness or rapidly worsening symptoms require immediate assessment.
