What does persistent bloating feel like with ovarian cysts?

A cyst can create pressure in the pelvis or abdomen, especially if it is large, changes position, or affects nearby bowel or bladder. You may notice a heavy feeling, one-sided pelvic ache, pain during sex, frequent urination, constipation, or changes in bleeding. Many cysts cause no symptoms, and bloating can also result from digestion, hormonal changes, fibroids, or other conditions. The sensation does not identify the cause by itself, so examination and, when appropriate, an ultrasound help clarify what is happening.

Arrange a medical appointment if bloating is new, persistent, or accompanied by pelvic pain or altered bleeding. Tell the clinician when it started, whether it is one-sided, how it relates to meals or your cycle, and whether you have bowel or bladder pressure. Assessment may include an abdominal and pelvic examination and imaging. Follow the monitoring plan if a cyst has already been found, and report changes rather than waiting for a scheduled review.

Go to urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, vomiting, faintness, fever, a rigid or very tender abdomen, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms can occur with complications such as twisting or rupture and need prompt assessment. Seek earlier review if swelling or pain is steadily worsening.
