What does oral antifungal treatment treat?

A clinician may prescribe tablets for nail fungus, scalp ringworm, extensive ringworm, or stubborn skin infections. Some medicines also treat selected forms of tinea versicolor or tinea incognito, depending on the diagnosis and how much skin is involved. The medicine works throughout the body, while the affected nail or skin may take time to look healthy as it grows or sheds.

A rash that looks ring-shaped is not automatically fungal. Eczema, irritation, and other conditions can resemble tinea, and steroid creams may alter its appearance. Diagnosis may involve examining the skin, hair, or nail before treatment is chosen.

Take each dose as prescribed and complete the planned course unless your prescriber tells you to stop. Tell the clinician about liver problems, pregnancy, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you use, because oral antifungals can interact with other treatments.

Keep affected skin clean and dry, avoid sharing towels or nail tools, and follow advice about treating household spread when relevant. Do not apply an old steroid or antifungal combination to a new rash without assessment, since it can obscure the pattern.

Contact your prescriber promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, severe nausea, extensive rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty during treatment. Seek assessment if the infection spreads, becomes painful, drains, or fails to improve as expected.

Ask which fungus is being treated, whether a sample is needed, how the medicine should be taken, which interactions matter, and what symptoms could signal a serious reaction.
