What does a non-healing sore feel like with squamous cell carcinoma?

A concerning sore may remain open, develop a firm raised edge, form a crust that returns, or feel sore when clothing, shaving, or washing rubs it. It can also look like a scaly patch, wart-like growth, or small ulcer. These features are not specific to cancer; irritation, infection, injury, and other skin conditions can behave similarly. A clinician may examine the area with magnification and may recommend a biopsy when the appearance or course needs clarification.

Arrange a skin examination for a sore that persists, repeatedly breaks down, or changes in texture. Until it is assessed, wash gently, pat dry, avoid picking the crust, and protect the area from sun. Note when it began, whether it bleeds or hurts, and any change in size, border, or surface. Do not use strong acids or leftover prescription creams on it without advice.

Seek prompt medical care if bleeding does not settle with gentle pressure, pain is increasing, redness is spreading, pus or fever develops, or the sore is near the eye, lip, or another sensitive site. A sore that keeps returning after seeming to heal also deserves assessment, even when discomfort is mild.

Ask whether the sore needs dermoscopy or biopsy, which harmless conditions can resemble it, how to cover it while it heals, and what changes should trigger an earlier review.
