What do night sweats feel like with Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis-related sweating can be heavy enough to wake you or require a change of sleepwear. You may feel hot during the episode and chilled afterward. Other possible features include a cough that persists, tiredness, fever, reduced appetite, weight loss or chest discomfort. Tuberculosis can affect areas outside the lungs, so symptoms vary. Night sweats alone cannot tell you whether Tuberculosis is present, because infections, medicines and other conditions can also cause them.

Arrange a medical assessment for repeated drenching sweats, particularly when they occur with a persistent cough, fever, fatigue or reduced appetite. Tell the clinician about recent travel, close contact with someone who has Tuberculosis, previous treatment and any immune-system condition. Follow instructions about testing and medicines carefully, and do not share prescribed antibiotics.

Seek urgent care for coughing blood, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, fainting or sudden worsening. If Tuberculosis has been diagnosed or is being investigated, ask the treating team how to protect household contacts and when to attend follow-up. Use a mask or other precautions if a clinician has advised them.

Ask which tests are appropriate, whether you need to avoid close contact while results are pending, and what symptoms should trigger urgent review. Ask how treatment affects contagiousness, follow-up and the people you live with.
