What does neck stiffness feel like with meningitis?

Meningitis-related stiffness can feel more than ordinary muscle tension: moving the neck may be markedly painful or restricted, particularly when trying to bring the chin toward the chest. The illness may develop quickly, and symptoms can vary. A rash may appear, but its absence does not rule meningitis out. Neck stiffness has many possible causes, yet stiffness combined with fever, a severe headache, confusion or reduced alertness needs emergency attention.

If meningitis is a concern, do not wait for the full symptom pattern or try to manage the stiffness at home. Contact emergency services or go to an emergency department immediately, especially when fever, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, a seizure or a rash is present. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused or very unwell.

Get emergency help for sudden or worsening neck stiffness with fever, severe headache, sensitivity to light, repeated vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, breathing difficulty or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Babies may instead be irritable, difficult to wake, feed poorly or have a bulging soft spot.

Tell the team when the stiffness began, whether fever or headache came first, how alert the person is, and whether there has been a rash, vomiting, seizure, recent infection or contact with someone unwell. Do not delay emergency assessment to gather every detail.
