What does neck pain feel like with cervical radiculopathy?

Irritation of a nerve root in the neck can produce pain that follows a narrow path rather than staying in one spot. Turning, extending, or tilting the neck may intensify it. You may also notice pins and needles, reduced sensation, or weakness in an arm or hand. These nerve symptoms can occur with neck stiffness, though the exact pattern depends on the nerve involved. Neck pain alone cannot identify the cause; an examination helps separate nerve irritation from muscle, joint, or other sources.

Keep gently active within comfortable limits and change position often instead of holding your neck still for long periods. Support your arm if that eases symptoms, and avoid lifting or neck movements that clearly increase radiating pain. A clinician or physiotherapist can check strength, sensation, reflexes, and neck movement, then suggest exercises or other treatment suited to you. Do not start forceful stretching or neck manipulation while arm weakness or marked tingling is present without professional guidance.

Arrange medical assessment if pain travels into an arm, keeps returning, or interferes with sleep, work, or grip. Seek urgent care for new or worsening arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of hand coordination, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Neck pain with severe headache, fever, confusion, or after a significant injury also needs prompt attention.
