What does nausea feel like with hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. Nausea may occur with tiredness, low appetite, a mild fever, discomfort under the ribs, vomiting or diarrhoea. Dark urine, pale stools, itchy skin, or yellowing of the eyes and skin can appear as liver inflammation develops. Symptoms vary, and nausea alone does not establish hepatitis A. Recent travel, contaminated food or water, or close contact with an infected person may be relevant to a clinician.

Rest, take regular sips of fluid, and eat small meals if you can tolerate food. Avoid alcohol and check with a clinician or pharmacist before taking non-prescription medicines or supplements, because some products can affect the liver. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food. Arrange medical advice for ongoing nausea, yellowing, dark urine, or a possible exposure so testing and guidance can be considered.

Seek urgent help for confusion, unusual sleepiness, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, bleeding, or rapidly worsening yellowing. Contact a clinician promptly for yellow eyes or skin, dark urine with pale stools, or suspected exposure. Emergency assessment is especially important if a person with liver disease becomes suddenly more unwell.
